Jimenez Continues Dominance, Extends Scoreless Streak

Is Ubaldo Jimenez the hottest pitcher in baseball right now?
His last 3 opponents would certainly agree. (photo courtesy MSNBC)

The day didn't start out very well for the Colorado Rockies. Before yesterday's game, they placed two of their starting pitchers, Jorge De La Rosa and Jason Hammel on the 15-day disabled list, and were scrambling to reset their rotation for at least the next two weeks. The good news is that they don't have to worry about one of the starting pitchers, Ubaldo Jimenez.

Last night, Jimenez extended his scoreless streak to 22 1/3 innings with six more shutout innings, backing the Colorado Rockies to a 12-1 over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Jimenez, now 5-0, gave up just two hits, walked two and struck out six, lowering his ERA to 0.79. “He’s one of the most dominating pitchers in baseball right now,” Rockies' teammate Carlos Gonzalez said. Gonzalez greatly helped the cause, with 3 hits and 5 RBI's, falling just a home run short of the cycle. “He was tough as he usually is,” Arizona outfielder Justin Upton said of Jimenez. “He had his fastball working and his offspeed stuff working and we couldn’t solve him.” With the recent injuries facing the Rockies' rotation, they will need Jimenez to continue baffling opposing hitters and to continue to be the steadying force at the top of the rotation.

Another pitcher is also showing dominance: Minnesota Twins' pitcher Francisco Liriano. Liriano threw eight shutout innings, giving up just four hits while striking out ten, en route to a 2-0 win over the Detroit Tigers. Liriano is now 3-0 with a 0.93 ERA, and looking like the youngster who blew onto the AL scene in 2006. “I had a lot of pitches working,” he said. “That felt good.” The Twins are now 14-6, thanks in large part to their starting rotation and bullpen, with closer Jon Rauch picking up his seventh save of the season....
