According to ESPN.com, Buck Showalter has agreed in principle to become the next manager for the Baltimore Orioles. Showalter's first game as manager would be on Tuesday against the Los Angeles Angels.

Showalter has previously managed the New York Yankees, Arizona Diamondbacks and Texas Rangers, and has an overall managerial record of 882-833 (.514).

Showalter will replace Dave Tremblay, who was fired by the Orioles on June 4. Juan Samuel has been serving as interim manager, and was in fact interviewed by the Orioles for the permanent position, along with former Rangers and New York Mets manager Bobby Valentine, former Cleveland Indians manager Eric Wedge, and former Orioles catcher Rick Dempsey.

The Orioles, currently in last place in the American League East division with a record of 31-70, have not had a winning season since 1997, employing five different managers during that time.

It is hoped that Showalter's managerial style will be a natural fit for the Orioles, as Showalter has a history of dealing well with inexperienced major leaguers, and espousing the need for strong fundamental play. Given the apparent lackadasical play of the team over the first 100 games of the 2010 season, this will certainly will be a welcome sight to Orioles' fans, who pine for a more competitive hometown team.

Showalter has a history of successfully turning around the fortunes of his teams. The Yankees had not made the playoffs in 14 years when Showalter guided them to the post-season in 1995. With the Rangers, Showalter had them in contention for a playoffs spot in 2004 after finishing last in the American League West the previous year.
